What Is Squidoo?
For the public, Squidoo is a site that contains a portal of different topics. People can choose a topic of their choice, and then browse among relevant listings to obtain a better understanding. Sites like Wikipedia do this as well, but for many Squidoo is a more interactive and creative way to obtain an quick overview of a topic.
For those like us in the online business world, Squidoo is a web platform that allows anyone to create a free web page. This page can then be linked to your website or blog to drive visitor traffic that you wouldn't have came across otherwise. Even better, Squidoo is free to use for EVERYONE! The only catch is that there's some crazy terminology to learn along the way:
- A Squidoo web page is called a "lens"
- The publisher of a lens is the "lensmaster"
- Every Squidoo lens is built with "modules"
In other words, a lensmaster (you) can create a lens, then build that lens with modules (based on a topic of choice) and then display this module-filled page to the public. Modules are simply features that can be added to your Squidoo lens to organize content and make it more appealing. Modules include text, RSS feeds, eBay and Amazon affiliate features, Google maps, voting polls, and tons more. Even though the Squidoo terminology can make lens construction seem complicated, it's actually very simple - with Squidoo links to help you out along the way.
After a Squidoo lens is published, people can visit and rate your lens, bookmark it on their web browser, share it with friends through email, or even link it to social networks like Digg or Facebook. Read along to find out how you can attract these visitors, and generate SEO for your web sites.
Squidoo - Online Business & SEO
Even though a Squidoo lens doesn't give you as much control as a web platform like WordPress would, it's a great place to promote your website or blog, and generate some traffic (and hopefully sales) for your current web sites. We did this with our website KickAssMMA.com, by constructing relevant Squidoo lenses and then linking the lenses back to our MMA site to generate traffic (that would not have existed otherwise).
