Keyword Research Tutorial
This keyword research tutorial explains what keywords are, why keyword research is important, and how web pages and/or sites can obtain search engine optimization (SEO).
What Is A Keyword?
A keyword is a word that has particular meaning to (the programming of) search engines, such as Google. In other words, it's what you type into Google to get an answer back. Similarly, a group of keywords is known as a keyword phrase.
- Keywords and phrases are selected based on their search, volume & competitive ability in search engines.
- Although there's no such thing as the "perfect keyword" or phrase, there ARE keywords and phrases that can help your niche website rank higher in search engines...the rest is up to what people think about your content and if they're willing to buy, return again, bookmark, etc.
Why Keyword Research?
Keyword research is done to find organic (also known as natural or actual) search terms - those that people actually enter into search engines, versus those that have already been researched and are bought by advertisers and corporate companies.
- The internet is a competitive, growing marketplace so having a set of relevant and successful keywords can help your web page obtain higher search engine results, whereas using poor keywords will rank you lower in search engines.
- In all, keyword research is about selecting keywords and phrases for SEO (which we will explain below) and increasing your website's return on investment (or ROI).
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Keyword Research
- Keyword research is performed during Search Engine Optimization (SEO), a marketing strategy that improves website traffic in regards to organic (actual) search engine results.
- The earlier your site appears in search results, the better your chances are of having visitors, and SEO can make this happen. In other words, SEO helps your website have "presence" in the World Wide Web.
- Click on the above link to learn about search engine optimization SEO strategies (other than keyword research) that can help you obtain higher search results!
Keyword Research - How To Choose Keywords for SEO
Search engine results are pages that include the exact searched phrase, or links that lead to such pages (read our On-Page Optimization post to learn about other SEO techniques). It's important to know that generic keywords (top searched words), such as food or clothing, are of no value to you because the competition over them makes it unrealistic for you to achieve a high search engine rating.
- Keywords should be around three to six phrases, and variations of similar phrases, to cover what your page is about and the phrases that you are hoping to rank for. It is important to ensure a natural flow of copy while still maintaining a proper keyword balance. In a 300-600 word document, you will want to use around 10 variations of your keywords on the page.
- Your most important keywords should be listed in the first content of your page and all phrases can (and should) be used and repeated somewhere else in the page content - naturally working in different variations. It's best to focus on words that are relevant but not overused, because when a web page is over packed with keywords (whether in the meta elements or content) it's known as keyword stuffing, and the search engine will label it spam.
Keyword Research Video
This video will walk you through the steps involved in doing successful keyword research. This video is very easy to learn from and will expose you to a very valuable tool to have for internet marketing.
How To Do SEO Keyword Research
Even though SEO keyword research is not an exact science, you can follow a process that will result in more effective decisions, rather then using keywords you may think are used. When researching keywords, you are finding phrases that people actually use, and that ALSO have decent (realistic) search engine ratings.
Follow these guidelines to conduct effective keyword research for your site and find superb keyword research tools:
1. Brainstorm & List Potential Keywords
- Based on your web site's niche, make a list of keywords that you think the ideal client would type into search engines when trying to find you. Having trouble? Try the Wordtracker FREE Keyword Research Tool.
- Next, form around 20 keyword phrases out of these words. For example, if your are selling cell phones, some key phrases may be the following: cell phones for sale, new cell phones, new cell phone models, buy a cell phone, best cell phone prices, cheap cell phones, discount cell phones, cellphone shop, buy cellphones online, etc.
2. Use The Google Keyword Research Tool To Test Phrases
- Type in around 10 phrases at a time (pressing "Enter" after each to begin a new line), click 'Get keyword Ideas' and then change the match type to the 'Exact' setting.
- These are Google's search volume results for keyword phrases that relate to yours. Look for good volume (generally above 2000) and other phrases that make sense for your niche website, jot down all of the phrases you like into a master list. Also, you can click the 'add' button next to each term you're interested in - they will be added to a list on the right hand side for even further research).
- Keep repeating searches and compare them to competitors. Think about new keyword phrase combinations and compile a master list of a few hundred phrases (depending on the size of your site).
3. Check Organic Keyword Competition Using Wordtracker Keyword Universe
- Go to Wordtracker and sign up for a free trial.
- Still unsure? Read Wordtracker Review before proceeding.
- Take your master list of key phrases and paste them into the field within Keyword Universe (up to 100 at a time).
- Select the keywords you would like to use based on their search, volume, and competitive ability. Pick the best, most relevant looking phrases that you believe your prospective clients might employ as well.

On Page Optimization Tutorial
On page optimization is the process of using SEO to design or re-design your website pages. If done properly, it will improve the search engine ranking and online visibility of your website and its pages. As a part of search engine optimization (SEO), on page optimization is the front lines of your SEO plan. To get started, use your keyword research data and combine it with these detailed SEO techniques to significantly increase your site's online visibility!![]()

Step 1 - Input All In One SEO Fields
Step 2 - Input Page Content
Step 3 - Optimize Page Content
Step 4 - Monetize Page Content
On Page Optimization
Introduction: Why On Page Optimization?
Here are the three steps we use in our overall search engine optimization (SEO) strategy:
- SEO content writing - the initial steps of SEO.
- On page optimization - implementing SEO techniques into a website's structure.
- Off page optimization - using SEO techniques outside of a website's structure.
Improve Search Engine Ranking with Google SEO Techniques
Implementing on page optimization, plus knowing how search engines rank web pages is a vital part of the overall SEO process. Out of all the search engines online, the majority of people (around 75%) choose Google.
Therefore, Google will be primary in our SEO techniques as well. Google is a very complex and changing phenomenon, and exactly how it works will never be made public. However, we can explain the main gist of the search engine and ways you can rank higher in Google...
- Google uses a meta 'crawler' or 'spider' called Googlebot to scan the internet and find good websites and pages to include in search engine listings. Googlebot only sees text (not pictures or videos - just the text that displays the pictures or video) in the form of source codes, when visiting your page. So, giving Googlebot the correctly formatted source code is needed for Google to determine your keywords and rankings.
- We use the All-In-One SEO plugin for WordPress to make this first step of optimization a snap. You simply type the text you want into the appropriate AIOSEO fields, and the plugin transforms the text into the exact source code Googlebot is looking to index.
NOTE: You'll need to have your WordPress website setup, the All In One SEO plugin (or Headspace II plugin) installed, your keyword research developed and article work order completed before beginning the on page optimization tutorial. If you have all of this in place, login to your WordPress dashboard and click 'Add New Post' or 'Page'. For this tutorial we will be using Pages, but Posts can be used interchangeably as well.
On Page Optimization Tutorial
Step 1: Input All-In-One SEO Fields
The first step in on page optimization is to fill in your WordPress page's meta tags in the All In One SEO fields based on your keyword research. This process can also be done in HTML of any platform, but WordPress makes it a piece of cake with the All In One SEO plugin. To enter your meta tags in the plugin, you must first setup a new 'Page'. Rollover 'Pages' in your WordPress dashboard and click 'Add New'. Next, take the Article Title from your work order and put it in the 'Page Title' field.
Scroll to the bottom of your 'Page' and locate the All In One SEO Pack. Use your keywords to fill in the meta tag title, description, and keywords (from your work order) into the meta tag fields:
Video Tutorial: How to use the All In One SEO for WordPress
This video shows you how you can add the all in one SEO plugin in order to optimize your website.
Update the AIOSEO fields in this order...
A. "Keywords" field
Keywords are the phrases that we are hoping to rank for in the search engines. The target keywords (most important keywords) should be listed first, and similar keywords next. Use your keyword research to...
- Choose 1 keyword as your target keyword and add it to the 'Keywords' field.
- Choose 3 more similar keywords and add them to the 'Keywords' field (comma separated).
The keywords, and importance, need to be figured out first, as the keywords will be the focus for the other AIOSEO fields and any content added to this page.
B. "Title" field
Write a descriptive 'Title' for your page and add it to the 'Title' field. The keywords that make up your page's title carry a significant amount of weight in Google. Find out which pages use a certain keyword phrase in their title tag by typing quotes (" ") around the phrase and searching for it in a search engine. These pages are optimized (designed to produce high volume search results) because their titles include targeted, successful keyword phrases.
- Use your target keyword as the first words of your 'Title'. Google gives more weight to the words farthest to the left.
- Use your similar keywords and/or a call to action where appropriate, to finish the 'Title'.
- Keep the 'Title' to roughly 60 characters.
The 'Title', when viewed on your website, appears at the top of your web browser in the blue 'title bar':

The 'Title' also appears as the title of your Google listing (linked to your page):

C. "Description" field
Write a descriptive 'Description' for your page and add it to the 'Description' field. This description should both compel the user to act as well as further reinforce the keyword relevance of the page.
- Use your target keyword in the first sentence of the 'Description'.
- Work in a few of your similar keywords.
- Write directly to the reader with a call to action.
- Explain to the reader exactly what they will find on the page & make sure that the page does indeed contain such information.
- Keep the 'Description' to roughly 160 characters.
The 'Description' is the description that appears in your Google listing:

All In One SEO Example
Title: Slot Machine History - Discover the Secrets behind Online & Mechanical Slot Machines
Description: Learn the truth about slot machine history and find out how slot machines have evolved from the mechanical slot machines to online slot machines. Click to find the best slot machine history resource online.
Keywords: Slot Machine History, Mechanical Slot Machines, Online Slot Machines, Slot Machines

Here's an excerpt taken from this web page's source code (note: this page is updated often, so some of the fields may have changed). The 'Title', 'Description' and 'Keywords' fields, when viewed from your website, appear like this:

To view this (in Firefox), click 'View', and then click 'Page Source'. This is the source code that your computer reads and displays the output as the website you see and also what Googlebot sees and uses to determine where your page will rank in the Google Search Engine.
If you're not using WordPress or the AIOSEO plugin, you will need to add these tags manually between the source code 'Head' tags:
- head tags = <head> </head>
- AIOSEO Title = <title>YOUR TITLE</title>
- AIOSEO Description = <meta name="description" content = "YOUR DESCRIPTION" >
- AIOSEO Keywords = <meta name="keywords" content = "YOUR KEYWORDS" >
If Googlebot does not see these tags, it will use the article title and the first number of characters on the page for your listing.
Step 2: Input Page Content
If you're new to online business and internet marketing, it's best to write your own content. Being able to do online research, finding credible resources and writing informative, keyword laden content is a skill you must learn in order to master online business. Once you've learned and started to make some money, you can then hire professional writers to write your content. More importantly, if you don't know how to do it yourself, you won't know whether a writer is giving you quality content - and without quality content, you can kiss any decent search engine rankings goodbye.
- Inputting content is simply the process of writing content or cutting and pasting content you've received from your writer into your website pages.
Google SEO seems to prefer content to be a minimum of 250- 300 words in length.
Tags / Categories - In Wordpress admin area you can list relavent keyword Tags (posts & pages) and select Categories (posts) that match your articles keywords and content.
Step 3: Optimize Page Content
Once you finalize the All In One SEO fields and input your content, it's time to optimize the actual content on the page. It's the role of the copywriter to develop the first round of content and work in the targeted and similar keywords. As with any written document, the first draft is rarely the last. Follow these website optimization techniques to further improve search engine rankings for your web pages.
On Page Optimization Tips and Strategies Video
Keyword Usage - Ensure a natural flow of copy while still maintaining proper keyword balance. Density: Include a minimum of 10 keyword variations of your target & similar keywords per 300 words of text. Incorporate your keywords as follows:
- Headings: Use headings that are compelling and informative - these are your article titles and should include your target keywords because they carry high authority with Google. Capitalize each word, and do not use punctuation.
- Subheadings: Use keywords in your subheadings and apply <h2> and <h3> tags. Capitalize each word, and do not use punctuation. These carry less authority than headings, but are still important to Google. WordPress makes this simple with an auto-select that lets you apply <H> tags to text.
- Bold / Italics: Apply bold <b> & italics <em> to keywords throughout the text. Underlined text may or may not be important to Google, but we like to only underline words that are links. Density: 1 bold keyword and 1 italics keyword per 300 words of text.
- Links: Use keywords as the anchor text for internal links, resource links & affiliate links <a>. Internal links target the same window, and external links target a new window. Each page should contain relevant internal links to pages within your website and to relevant, non-competing external pages outside of your website. Apply no follow tags to affiliate links. Density: 2 affiliate links, 1 internal link and 1 external link per 300 words of text.
- Images: Images include logos, banners, pictures, photos, etc. Use keywords in image <img> names, titles, alt text, and captions. Link each image with a URL of your choice.
- Lists / Bullets - Article that contain lists <li> allows for easy scanning by the reader. Include a bold affiliate link in your list and watch your conversions skyrocket.
- Blockquotes - When you want to highlight something specific to your readers, use the blockquote to set this text apart from the rest of your article.
This is an example of a blockquote!
Lead Your Reader - Using keywords in headings, sub-headings, bold, italics, links, images and lists is vital for search engine optimization (SEO), but it's equally as important to setup your articles for readers to scan, and lead readers to the items on the page that you want them to click.
Skimming & Scanning - Make your page easy to skim and scan (which is what a lot of your readers do), yet still provide the important information that readers need. Lists are encouraged, so feel free to break down the content into lists when possible.
Consistent Voice - The page content and overall site should use a consistent voice throughout. Talk to your readers, not at them. Teach your readers, don't sell them. If you need to change up how the content reads, be sure to maintain the same voice.
Target Market - Know who you are trying to attract to your page, who is actually coming and what they are looking for when they arrive. Be sure to have what they are looking for, available and ready for them to click.
Features & Benefits - Be sure to list out both the features and benefits of your site. Bullets are great for this kind of information - a list of 4-5 bullets, with the final bullet being a call to action affiliate link, is a great method to use.
Calls to Action - Use textual calls that drive visitors to the point of conversion. At a minimum, I like one "call to action" above the fold and another at the very bottom of a page. One or two more are fine, but try not to over overdue it.
Active Words - Use words that do more than just inform. Try to compel your reader to take action with words like the following: Claim Your Bonus, Act Now, Download Free Software, Start Playing Now, Check This Out, Learn More, We Can't Do This All Day, etc.
Once you finalize the first few phases of on page optimization, make sure that the page is fully optimized by using the following monetization methods:
- Affiliate Links
- Affiliate Banners
- phpBay plugin
- phpZon plugin
- Google Adwords
Have at least one affiliate link, banner, offer, etc. visible above the fold.

Google Analytics & Link Tracking
A step-by-step tutorial on how to setup a web site with Google Analytics and link tracking!
1. Setup a Google Web Site Analytics profile:
a. Click the "Access Analytic" button on the right side of the page (log in).
b. At the bottom of the page you will see an "Add Website Profile" link. Click that link.
c. Leave the profile type set to "Add a profile for a new domain".
d. Next, add the domain into the URL text box, and choose your country and time zone.
e. Click the continue button. You should now see the "New Tracking Code (ga.js)" which looks like this:
<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-8941172-2");
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}</script>
f. Copy this link tracking code and click the "Finish" button. You are now done with Google Analitics and may proceed to step 2.
2. Insert the link tracking code into HTML of Website.
a. Login to your website's WordPress admin panel.
b. Under the "Appearance" tab, click the "Editor" link.
c. On the right-hand side, there is a list of links to different .php files. Find "Footer (footer.php)" and click on that link.
d. Intert the tracking code within the HTML, just ABOVE the </body> tag.
e. Click the "Update File" button at the bottom of the page (You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.).
3. Create links to be tracked.
a. In order for link tracking to work successfully, links require a piece of code to be inserted. The code is:
onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/go/page-slug-link1.com');
b. To keep track of each link and what position it is on which page, we will employ a structured identification system. In the code, /go/page-slug-link1.com, "page-slug" will be the page in which the link is being placed. For example, if you were to place a link on this page:
http://www.roulletteonline.com/flash-roulette/, "/flash-roulette" would take the place of "/page-slug". "link1.com" is to be replaced by the name of the casino or Website that we are linking to. For example, if we were linking to Bodog Casino we could simply put "bodog1.com". The number "1" in the link means that this is the first link on the page that goes to Bodog. If it were the 2nd link placed on the page to Bodog you would use a number 2, and so on...
c. A properly coded link should look as follows:
<a href="http://www.roulletteonline.com/go/bodog/" target="blank" onClick="javascript: page

How To Search In Google
Google is a search engine that scours the web for pages relevant to a query. Comprised of a keyword or keyword phrase,a query is how you request data from Google (what you type in the search bar).
A basic query is generally satisfactory, but the following tips and tricks can help you learn how to search in Google more successfully and obtain better results!
Google Site Search Tips & Tricks...
Basic Google Search Tips
It's important to remember that a Google site search applies almost all queried words. Each queried word is separately searched unless it is a common word (a, the, for, etc)--which are usually ignored if they not first word in the query. Also, Google is not case sensitive and punctuation - except that of the dollar, underscore and hyphen symbol - is often ignored.
In a basic search, try to keep it simple, yet specific. In as few words as possible, use descriptive search words that you think may appear on the page that you are searching for.
Here are some cool Google Search Tips and Tricks
This video shows you some very helpful tricks and tips that will make your searching efforts much better. Watch and learn now all the cool things you can do with Google searches.
Google Advanced Search Tricks
- By default, Google Advanced Search considers all queried words, yet often ignores common words. Have Google pay more attention to a word by attaching a + symbol to the beginning (+how to play poker).
- Conversely, when a - symbol is placed in front of a word (or even a website) it is omitted from a search (buy gold - silver). However, unlike the + symbol, the - symbol needs a space between it and the first letter (or it would be deciphered a hyphen).
- Rather than searching for each word individually, adding quotations (" ") tells Google to search for an exact wording or phrase ("The Beatles").
- Google uses synonyms automatically. For example, the query [Iowa history] is additionally searched as [ia history]. It is possible to prevent such synonyms in your search by putting quotes (" ") around a word.
- By typing OR in all caps (Poker Tournaments 2009 OR 2010), you can further specify the words in a search. Without this, Google would search for sites that include both words on the same page, because "and" is the default.
- The * symbol is known as a wild card, and is a way to get Google to fill in the blank for you. Google uses this opportunity to find the best matches for whole words, not on the parts of the words themselves. For example [make money by * on the Internet] will return results about types of Internet services that people may be able to make money from.
- Search within a specific site by entering a web page title in the query. For example, the query [poker site: kickasspoker.com] will return pages only from kickasspoker.com.
- Search for a whole class of sites, such as only within an .edu domain site (college attendance: .edu). Or you can search web pages that are related in content by typing " related" before a website address (related: www.google.com).

Wordtracker Keyword Research
This is a down and dirty how to use Wordtracker for initial keyword research:
Log in at Wordtracker.com (click that link for a free 7 day trial, full use).
Wordtracker Keyword Research & Suggestion Tool
Click on use keyword universe once logged in.
![]()
Once clicking that, type in a broad search phrase. I think of this as the master phrase, where you can then choose from hundreds of variations and add them to your keyword basket.
Let's type in Sleeping Bags, why sleeping bags? Because I'm working on setting up a phpbay wordpress site that allows me to affiliate for all types of sleeping bags.
and click 'proceed'
![]()
Then that pulls up a whole list of related keywordswords underneath, left hand column, it will look like this..
![]()
Then click a phrase on the left hand column (down near the bottom there).
That slaps up a list of phrases on the right.
Click the itty bitty white link at the top of those words that says 'click here to add all of these to the basket'
look down at the bottom middle of the screen, you'll see those keywords in the basket.
![]()
If I had clicked 'add keywords' prior to taking the screenshot the "0" would have been "157 as all of the keywords related to 'sleeping bags' would have been added to my basket.
Keep clicking on words on the left hand column and then clicking 'add all of these words to the basket' on the right until you have somewhere around 100-300 words to start.
This is just a broad search to get a broad look at what is out there and available.
Then click 'step 3'
Then just click the 'competition search' button (don't worry about clicking on the words down below at all, just check em all).
![]()
then click the 'google checkbox'
![]()
I stick with just selecting google for this example, but you can pick two if you'd prefer. Then click the 'proceed' button at the bottom right.
Now it begins running results, this is the step that will reveal competitive information on your phrases.
Give it a min or so to query the google.
Results are ranked by KEI which is a comparison of volume of searches (more the better) compared to the # of competing sites (less the better).
Let's take a look at our keyword results from the sleeping bag keyphrase search.

Disclaimer about these keyword search results - they aren't always accurate.
When you find something promising you always need to do a quick double check and check results yourself as well, and there is no way to tell if the results are on the money or not, I have had instances of them being wrong and estimates way off. Best advice I have is to first use your brain and secondly use wordtracker results to make sure you aren't missing anything easy to snag.
Keyword Research With Wordtracker Tutorial
This two video series provides you with a step by step tutorial on how to use the Wordtracker keyword generator for SEO and keyword research. If you are unfamiliar with Wordtracker this is a perfect tutorial to help you get started.
Understanding the Keyword Results
I work from the top down, right to left when analyzing the results.
- Competing - The column on the far right is the competing websites, or other sites that google has indexed for that keyword. The lower the better in terms of pure "rankability".
- 24Hrs - How many estimated searches per day for the specific phrase
- Count - How often the phrase appears in their specific database in the past 110 days from 'major metacrawlers)
- KEI Analysis - keyword effectiveness index, developed by 1stearchranking.net
Ok, so about these results: It looks like "teenage sleeping bags", listed there at #2 could be a no brainer piece of content to create. That's a great keyword to target. There are only 5 competing sites in the results meaning that if your page gets indexed then it will most likely rank for a phrase match search for that phrase.
Now just because a word has a high kei doesn't mean it is worth ranking for. You'll have to use your brain power to determine whether or not that phrase would be worth ranking for.
If you don't get a lot of results early on, right after you click on keyword universe, use a more broad keyphrase. "Sleeping Bags" will always get more results than "Brown Sleeping Bags" but in a competitive niche, you might need to delve down that deep to find a niche within a niche that has potential. Know what i'm saying?
Use common sense - if there is some random phrase that gets tons of searches it will be up to you to decide whether or not you could benefit your site in some way for ranking for that phrase.
