4 Day Cash Machine – Email Campaign

4 Day Cash Machine - Email The 4 Day Cash Machine email campaign is a great way to test your existing email list and put some extra cash in your pocket. This simple, straight-forward system has proven to be successful for many online businesses. Scroll down to find out how the 4 Day Cash Machine can be a great email marketing campaign to add to your online business as well!

What Is The 4 Day Cash Machine?

The 4 Day Cash Machine is an email newsletter marketing campaign developed by Frank Kern. As part of Kern's "Mass Control" training course, the 4 Day Cash Machine is actually a very simple email marketing program that involves the following:

  • Offering a product or digital service for an incredible (discounted) sales price during a four-day time period, with the offer expiring on the fourth day.
  • The first email explains a "great" offer, its benefits and includes a call-to-action for subscribers to purchase the product/service. The remaining three emails then serve as reminders - reinstating that the discounted price of the product/service is about to expire.

Check out this link to see how our first day of the Trying the 4 Day Cash Machine went! For the last three days, read our Email Marketing Success with 4 Day Cash Machine post.

What Do I Need for the 4 Day Cash Machine?

The following is needed to successfully launch the 4 Day Cash Machine email campaign:

  1. A product or service that can be offered to your consumers. Since this campaign is meant for any product/service at any time,  ClickBank is a great place to look if you need to find a product/service to offer your email list. Go off your website's niche...
  2. An email list. Even a prospect list that is from forever ago will work. What do you have to lose anyway?
  3. In order to send the emails, and email marketing software is a necessity. We use AWeber, because it is simple and easy to send out mass email campaigns at anytime. Plus, you can see statistics from your email campaigns, including how many opens and click-troughs there were.

4 Day Cash Machine – Case Studies

4 Day Cash Machine Case Studies The 4 Day Cash Machine is an email newsletter marketing campaign that has proven successful for many online businesses. Along with our email newsletter marketing software AWeber, and our affiliate marketing partner site ClickBank, we conducted the following case studies to test out the "4 Day Cash Machine" for ourselves. Scroll down to see how our 4 Day Cash Machine campaigns turned out!

What is the 4 Day Cash Machine?

A past employee of ours, who now runs PotPieGirl.com, told us about the "4 Day Cash Machine". Simply put, the 4 Day Cash Machine is an email newsletter marketing campaign that involves offering a product or digital service at a discounted price for four days in a row - with the offer expiring at the end of the four days.

  • The first email explains a "great" offer, its benefits and includes a call-to-action. The remaining three emails then serve as reminders - reinstating that the special sale price of the product/service is about to expire.
  • By using the "4 Day Cash Machine", an online business has the opportunity to make more sales, customer awareness, and web traffic.

"4 Day Cash Machine" Case Study #1

Poker Dealer School - DealerTraining.comWe put the "4 Day Cash Machine" campaign to use with our Dealer-Training site and Poker Dealer School, which includes an eBook, videos, tricks of the trade, instructions, and a certificate of completion.

  • With our Poker Dealer School, anyone can learn how to deal poker at casino standards and make around $300 a night dealing at poker tournaments.
  • The subscribers who purchased the program already were automatically deleted from the email list. So, we offered the program to subscribers who had not purchased the program yet, hoping that a discount price would entice them to do so.

Although the "4 Day Cash Machine" seemed spammy at first, the internet marketing techniques proved to increase our sales and generate more web traffic. Here's how the process went:

  1. The price of the Poker Dealer School was marked at 75% off. Since the normal selling price is$197, this offer was only $49 - pretty significant savings for someone who's looking to learn the art of dealing poker.
  2. We wrote a 4-day email series and put the "4 Day Cash Machine" into use with our email newsletter software AWeber and our current email list (those who had signed up to learn more information on dealer training).

Here's a look at our first "4 Day Cash Machine" (May 20-23, 2009) campaign results:

  • On the 1st day, we had a 25.1% open rate, a 6.9% click-through rate, 10 sales, and a 10/75 conversion rate. To find out more about our 1st day of the "4 Day Cash Machine", check out our post - Trying the "4 Day Cash Machine".
  • 2nd day: 13% open rate, 5.6% click-through rate, three sales, , and a conversion rate of 3/57.
  • 3rd day:  13.6 open rate, 3.4% click-through (all to buy now page, none to the sales lander), eight sales, and a conversion rate of 8/39.
  • 4th day: 12.3 open rate, 4% click-through, and 10 sales, and a 10/49 conversion rate.

To view our results more easily, here are some visuals of our try at the "4 Day Cash Machine", using AWeber and ClickBank:

4 Day Cash Machine - ResultsEmail Newsletter Campaign - 4 Day Cash Machine

  • As for unsubscribers, we had four opt out of our email list the day prior to the campaign but resulted in ZERO unsubscribers during and immediately after the campaign.

With everything considered, this success serves as a starting point to judge future case studies off of and (hopefully) overcome in the future! Check out the following post on our 1st Cast Study of the 4 Day Cash Machine - Using AWeber for the "4 Day Cash Machine" email harvest!

"4 Day Cash Machine" Case Study #2

For our second case study, we put the "4 Day Cash Machine" to use our Dealer-Training site again, to see how it would compare to our first run-through. Just like the first case study, we offered our dealer training package Poker Dealer School, and used the Dealer-Training site's newsletter email list. The customers who had already bought the poker dealing program were automatically removed, so we were excited to have a second try at those interested in hearing about poker-related software. Here's how the process of our second case study went:

  1. Again, we offered our Poker Dealing School for $49, which is 75% off the normal selling price of$197.
  2. Using the email newsletter software AWeber, we wrote a different 4-day email series (September 22 - 25, 2009), and sent out the messages to our Kick Ass Poker email list (those who had already bought the program we automatically deleted) at 11:00 a.m on each day.

Here's a look at our Case Study #2 results of the "4 Day Cash Machine":

  • 1st day: 14.4% open rate, a 2.4% click-through rate, four sales, and a 4/27 conversion rate.
  • 2nd day: 14.5% open rate, 2.1% click-through rate, three sales, and a conversion rate of 3/24.
  • 3rd day:  10.7% open rate, 4.3% click-through, 12 sales, and a conversion rate of 12/48.
  • 4th day: 7.3% open rate, 2% click through, one sale, and a conversion rate of 1/22.

To view our results more easily, here are some visuals of our try at the "4 Day Cash Machine", using AWeber and ClickBank:

robots.txt File

robots.txt FileThe robots.txt file is a fast, easy, and popular way to make your website more search engine friendly. Scroll down to discover even more about robot.txt, and how it can it can help your website in achieving search engine optimization (SEO)!

What is a robots.txt File?

The Robots.txt is a text file that is found (or placed) on a website's server, with the purpose of telling web robots how to decipher that site's pages. Web robots (also known as web wanderers, crawlers or spiders) are programs that decipher web pages and index them in search engines. This is known as search engine indexing and can make you rank higher in search engines.

For example, Google is a search engine that has a robot called the "googlebot" that uses robots.txt file for search engine indexing and and ranking web pages.

The robots.txt file gives web robots instructions about a website; this is called the Robots Exclusion Protocol. In this process, robots look for the robots.txt file, because it gives directions on how to decipher and index your site. When a robots.txt file is used correctly, web traffic and search engine rankings can increase  - significantly helping your SEO!

What Does A robots.txt File Look Like?

The robots.txt file is one of the simplest piece of HTML code that you will ever have to write or edit. Most all WordPress platforms already include a robots.txt file (in the root folder of your website), so all that's left to do is edit it according to your needs.

For most small websites, the following robots.txt code is used to tell web robots to visit ALL pages of your site, without any specific instructions:

User-Agent *
Disallow:

  • The value of the "User-agent" field is the name of the robot you want to give instructions for, and when an asterisk (*) is present this means that ALL search engines are allowed to perform search engine indexing on your site.
  • The "Disallow" field states the name of the URL that is not to be visited and indexed in search engines. This can be a full path or a partial path. If left empty, the "Disallow" field indicates that all URL's can be retrieved.

Creating A robot.txt - Tips & Examples

  • In the robots.txt file, it's important to add forward slashes before and after a folder name, because search engines need to place this onto the end of your domain name (www.myfamouswebsite.com/SEO-Example/. If a website's folder is found at a different URL, then simply rename the folder and adjust accordingly.
  • You can edit the "User-Agent" so that only specific engines can track your website or a specific page. To do so, look up the name of a search engine's robot (such as Google's "googlebot" and/or Yahoo's "slurp") and then add it like this:

User-Agent: googlebot
Disallow: /SEO-Example/

  • If you want to block an area of your site (like an irrelevant example page), then simply add that page's folder name to the "disallow" line:

User-Agent:*
Disallow: /SEO-Example/

  • For every "Disallow" action, there needs to be a different line, and there can be no blank lines in between such as:

User-agent:*
Disallow: /gif/
Disallow: /tmp/

  • To specify that NO web robots should visit any URL starting with /tmp/ or /example/:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /example/

  • The robots.txt file is a publicly available file, so ANYONE can see what sections of your server you don't want web robots to use. In other words, don't try to use robots.txt to hide information.

.htaccess File Tutorial

.htaccess File TutorialThis .htacess file tutorial will help you discover what an .htaccess file is, and how you can use these files to CONTROL your website, and help it become noticeably faster and efficient. Scroll down to learn about .htaccess files and how they can easily improve your website's performance and help overcome your competition!

What Is An .htaccess File?

The .htaccess (hypertext access) file is a directory-level configuration file made of Hyper Test Markup Language (HTML) language. By properly placing .htaccess files in various (or all) directories of a web server, you are able to control how a server configures your website - making it more user friendly and efficient.

You must be extremely careful when creating/editing .htaccess files, because even a small mistake can make your website stop working! To avoid this, make a copy of the original content, keep it in a safe place (so you can easily revert back to it), and immediately check your site after any .htaccess file changes have been made.

  • Most all WordPress platforms already include an .htaccess file, as do many other platforms on the internet today. If you don't have an .htaccess file, don't worry it's an easy fix! Click here to discover how to create an .htaccess file.
  • What Can An .htaccess File Do?

An .htaccess file affects the directory, or sub-directory, that it is placed in. Each of your directories can include its own .htaccess file with specific instructions, or an .htaccess file can be placed in your root so that it affects every single directory on your site.

.htaccess files allow you to perform many different actions behind-the-scenes of your website. There are many uses for an .htaccess file, here are a couple of our favorites:

    • Custom Error Pages: You can create custom error pages (like the HTTP 404 Not Found error page) so that visitors will have a more unique and attention-grabbing experience, versus having a more negative experience with a default or host error page.
    • .htaccess Redirect: If you have to change a page or site location, you can use an .htaccess file to automatically redirect visitors to a new location with no delay (so that the old location never loads). Click on this link to find out how to .htaccess Filesuse .htaccess to redirect visitors to a new page or site.

    Other common .htaccess examples:

    • Denying/Allowing users with certain IP addresses
    • Editing file extensions
    • Preventing a directory listing or index from being shown
    • Rewriting URLs
    • Setting up password protected directories and folders
    • Using an alternative file as the index file

    Basic Guide To PHP Coding

    What is PHP Anyways?

    • PHP is one of the most commonly used, all purpose scripting languages for web development.

Basically, it is a set of coding used to create dynamic and interactive web pages, and helps you manage web development. It is a powerful tool to have when creating interactive, dynamic web pages. PHP usually always runs on a web server and can be embedded into HTML and then used to create cool web page content for your blog or web site.  It is compatible with most web servers, and operating systems and can be used free of charge. PHP has been installed and used by over 20 million web pages and on over 1 million web servers.

PHP is a server-side scripting language that allows you to produce dynamic web pages with PHP and HTML. This means that, when a visitor comes to your page, the web server reads the PHP coding, and sends the information back to the viewer's browser and displays your web page. It is a free software licensed by PHP that can be used in standalone graphical applications and includes the ability to be use as a command line interface.

    PHP Usage

Basically it is used for building, managing, and personalizing your web pages.  It is a web development tool and generally runs on a web server. PHP code is usually used for dynamic content on a web page, but can also be used to control command line scripting and client side GUI applications. It is offered free of charge for and provides anyone the full source code to build, and customize their own web sites. It can be used on nearly all web servers and is compatible with most operating systems.

While it was mainly designed for the creation of dynamic web content, PHP is now mostly focused on server side scripting. In 2007, the PHP coding was noted as the most popular Apache module available, and had over 20 million web domains hosted on PHP servers. Many of the most popular web sites on the web are PHP coded which includes Facebook, Wikipedia, Yahoo!, Digg, YouTube, and many more. One of the most popular and important web sites for internet users, WordPress, is written in PHP and depend heavily on PHP coding.

    • WordPress was structured based on the PHP language and coding and the entire platform of WordPress is built on PHP and CSS codes. WordPress is a a content management system that allows users to publish interactive blogs and web pages. It includes a number of tools, such as themes and plugins, that come along with it. All of WordPress is written in PHP and all of the WordPress applications use PHP language. Some of the most popular WordPress applications, such WP Themes and WP Plugins, depend on the PHP codes. WordPress Themes wouldn't be so dynamic if it weren't for PHP.

If you are beginner to using PHP and want more information about it, try this introductory tutorial from the PHP website. This video tutorial on PHP and walks you through the basics to using and understanding PHP coding. It is very helpful to beginners learning about PHP.

    More About PHP

Most web servers and web domains originally (and some still do) use HTML language. HTML coding was developed before PHP's time and was the original coding language used on the web. PHP was created to replace this HTML coding and was designed to allow the user more dynamic range than HTML coding.

PHP only absorbs code that fall inside its delimiters, and anything that falls outside these delimiters is sent to the output and PHP does not process this. The tags used for PHP are <?php to open and ?> to close PHP coded commands. The PHP engine takes all of the information inside the tags and processes the commands.

    • Writing PHP:  PHP scripts always fall between the two PHP tags, which tells the web server to read the commands inside the tags and process that only that information. Here are the three forms of tags you can use to write PHP code:
    1. <? PHP code here ?>
    2. <?php PHP code here php?>
    3. <script language="php"> PHP code here </script>
    • So basically what you do is you write out these tags and then enter whatever phrase or command you want to be displayed inside these tags and the PHP engine will read and process this information. Here's an example:
    1. <?php Hi World, This is My Website php?> - This will display the phrase " Hi World, This is My Website" on your web page.

The PHP language syntax is very similar to other high level languages that follow the C style syntax. PHP and the C, C++, Java, and Perl, are all very alike in terms of language syntax. With PHP, you can also create your own commands and codes for your web development. Since PHP scripts are found inside HTML documents, you don't need any kind of editor to create pages, but you do need to be running on a PHP supported server.  All you need is a simple text editor such as the generic Notepad found in almost every PC.

    PHP History

PHP was originally called Personal Home Page, but was shortened to PHP later. PHP was originally designed in 1995 by IT programmer Rasmus Lerdorf and is now being further developed by the PHP Group. Lerdorf designed these PHP tools to replace the program he was using to manage his personal homepage. PHP began as a simple tool used to perform basic tasks on his web site, such as displaying images, and track statistics about his page. It has evolved over 14 years to now perform a huge variety of tasks that create dynamic, highly interactive web pages for users. There has been numerous times and the most current version is PHP 5.3. PHP 6.0 is the newest updated version and will be released in the near future.

    Basic HTML Tutorial

Basic HTML TutorialIs HTML Coding new to you? This basic HTML tutorial provides a simple overview of HTML and its importance.

Even though HTML coding may seem overwhelming at first, believe us, it's not as complicated as it looks!

The easiest way to learn HTML, is to look at a web page that is already designed. To view the HTML coding on this page, select "View" on your browser, click "Page Source", and then read through the HTML information below to find out more...

    What Is HTML Coding?

Hyper Test Markup Language, or HTML coding,  is the "Hyper Text Markup Language" that's used to build online content. The most common HTML documents are web pages, which are made up of markup tags (a.k.a. HTML tags) that describe the overall structure, lay out, and presentation of the page. Most importantly, these tags are what web browsers use to interpret ANY content online.

    HTML Tags

Also known as markup tags, HTML Tags are the commands that web browsers need in order to interpret a web page.

    • Visually, HTML tags are merely words that have been surrounded by angle brackets (<words>). That is, they always begin with a "less than" symbol (<) and end with a "greater than" symbol (>). These symbols surround the content apply meaning to the text (for web browsers to use).

HTML tags normally come in pairs (such as <b> and </b>) - with the first tag as the start tag and the second as the end tag. Here are three types of HTML tags:

    1. HTML start tag - the command that begins an operation (<tag>)
    2. HTML end tag - the command that stops an operation by including a forward slash before the command itself (</tag>)
    3. HTML empty tag - is simply a single tag that can make a demand by itself. These do NOT require a closing tag. Common empty tags are used in images, line breaks, and horizontal rules.

    Basic HTML Document Structure

Here is a basic HTML document structure:

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
    <html>
    <head></head>
    <body></body>
    </html>

    • Don't worry! We will further explain this HTML coding throughout the rest of this post...

Before we list HTML tags and commands, here's some basic HTML info:

    • Extra spaces and line breaks (blank lines) in an HTML document do NOT matter, because they are ignored when HTML is interpreted.
    • If you're creating a web site, learning HTML is optional because web editors (like Macromedia Dreamweaver) are available today that can create a website for you - just as you would use Word to create a normal document.
    • In order to decipher your HTML content online, a DOCTYPE Declaration (DTD or Document Type Declaration) code is needed to tell web browsers what type of web page coding your HTML content complies with.
    • Tags in HTML are not case sensitive, so commands will work whether a word is capitalized or not.

    Basic HTML Tags & Commands

    • <html> - The text between <html> and </html> describes the web page and is known as the "root element". ALL elements are contained in this tag, because it specifies the beginning and the end of an HTML document.
    • <body> - The text between <body> and </body> is the visible content of your page, known as "document body elements".
    • <head> - The text between <head> and </head> is known as "document head elements", which are used to display headings. In HTML coding, there are six levels of headings (H1 through H6), with H1 being the most important to search engines, H2 slightly less important, and so on...with H6 being the least important.

    Getting Started With HTML Coding

Other than a computer, you will need the following to begin using HTML:

    • A text (*.txt) editor of your choice where you can securely save all of your HTML work - Notepad (found in your "Accessories" folder) will work fine for now. For future reference, most people opt for programs like Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage once they are ready to move onto more advanced HTML formatting.
    • Any web browser - such as FireFox or Internet Explorer.
    • Space to save all of your HTML work. Hard drive space, your web server, or a decent-sized flash drive is fine.
    • A web page (of your choice) where you can put your HTML to use!

    CSS Code Tutorial

CSS Code TutorialThis CSS code tutorial provides a basic overview of CSS codes, and how they can be used to change the appearance of a web page. When design attributes were added to markup language (HTML, XHTML, etc) specifications, it became a long and expensive nightmare for web developers. To solve this issue, all formatting options were removed and CSS was created.

Although CSS codes may seem overwhelming at first, believe us, it's not as complicated as it looks!

    What Are CSS Codes?

Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS codes,  allow you to further change the appearance of a web page's colors, fonts, and layout. Just as Microsoft Word lets you change the appearance of a document, the visual appeal of a raw HTML (or other markup language) document can also be altered.

    CSS Code Attributes

    • In order to be readable and writable by humans, CSS language uses basic desktop publishing terminology - such as that of HTML coding language.
    • CSS codes contain rules - with each rule (or rule-set) consisting of three parts: - a selector, a property and a value:
    1. Selector - the link between the HTML document and the style sheet
    2. Property - the attribute you want to change
    3. Value - the change of style that you want to make
    • As a whole, a CSS code looks like this: selector {property:value}. Note that the "property" and "value" are separated by a colon and surrounded by curly braces.

    CSS Code Design Tips

    • CSS codes can either be attached as a separate document, or embedded in the HTML document. Either way, it is a smart choice to save your CSS codes in another location other than your web page.
    • To make CSS codes more readable, you can describe one property per line, like this:
      p
      {
      text-align:right;
      color:green;
      font-family:arial
      }
    • You can save time by grouping "selectors" with commas. For example, you can group all header elements to be displayed in the same color:
      h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6
      {
      color:red
      }
    • When more than one "property" needs to be specified, each property should be separated with a semicolon: p {text-align:center;color:green}
    • If the "value" contains more than one word, then quotes should be put around it: p {font-family:"times new roman"}

CSS has different levels and variations - with new features being added and higher levels being reached every year. Even though this post reviews only the basic elements of CSS codes, it's important to keep in mind that more advanced CSS codes are also possible. Check out this advanced Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) Tutorial to learn even more about CSS codes!

    Email Newsletter Marketing Tips

Since there isn't a "magic formula" for creating a successful newsletter, we've decided to share some email marketing tips to help along the way...

    • Visualize your audience (both prospects and current visitors) and clearly identify what clientele you are targeting, then ask yourself what content you can provide to them. Here is a great article to help you when writting: 15 Email Marketing Best Practices.
    • Use subject lines that will entice people to open your email. Here is a great list we found and use in our own email campaigns: Top 10 Subject Line Words That Get Attention
    • List detailed reasons as to why people should subscribe to your site's newsletter. People want to know what they're signing up for, how often it's published, and what value they can receive in return. If possible, offer premiums for subscribing to your newsletter. These incentives even be informative content that is only available to subscribed members.
    • Think "one-on-one" marketing and make your letters personal. By doing so, you can stray away from your competitors who send out an uninteresting "blast-to-all" marketing newsletter.
    • Be sure to have an obvious link to your privacy page, which should clearly state that you do not intend to share your subscribers' email addresses, personal info, etc. It's a great idea to put a subscription link on the privacy page as well!
    • There are many opinions on when is the best day and time to send a newsletter. Check out this post to learn about the best day to send an email newsletter based on YOUR customers via Google Analytics.
    • One of the most looked-over portions of newsletter marketing is the "Thank You" page that comes up after someone subscribes to a newsletter. Why not make it more meaningful, witty, or unique by giving them something to remember - instead of something to overlook.

How To Create A Custom 404 Error Page

Create A Custom 404 Error Page!By creating a Custom 404 Error Page,  you can turn your unhelpful default 404 Error page into a more accommodating and user-friendly resource for visitors. Out of all HTTP errors, the HTTP 404 "Not Found" Error is the most common error online. With so many 404 Errors happening online everyday, it's a safe bet that a Custom 404 Error Page could greatly influence any visitor's decision to leave or remain at your site.

What Is An HTTP 404 "Not Found" Error Page?

HTTP stands for "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol" code, which lets you retrieve information from servers and browsers online. Here, we are talking about an HTTP 404 Error Page, with "404" meaning "Not Found" in HTTP terms. When a HTTP 404 "Not Found" Error Page is reached, this means a site's server was found but the URL/page requested is not available at the time.

A 404 "Not Found" Error occurs because of the following:

    • A URL has been moved to another location.
    • Someone had clicked on an expired link.
    • The web address was typed incorrectly.
    • The URL has been deleted completely.

Please note that 404 errors should NOT be confused with 410 ("Server Not Found") or 410 ("Gone") error codes, because a 404 error still indicates that the requested URL may still be available in the future - whereas the others do not.

Default vs. Custom HTTP 404 ("Not Found") Error

A default 404 page is bland, unhelpful, and a major turn off for the visitors you've worked so hard to obtain. When people encounter an HTTP 404 "Not Found" Error Page, they usually:

    1. Click the BACK button on their browser to leave the page.
    2. Click the BACK button, and try to access the page again.
    3. Write the webmaster of the site to inform them of the situation (if your lucky).
    4. Leave the site completely, and choose another site.

Of the above actions, leaving the site completely (and turning to a search engine) is the most common decision when visitors encounter the default 404 error page.  Therefore, more user-friendly Custom 404 Error Page is always a superb addition to a website.

Why Use A Custom 404 Error Page?

Check out this Custom 404 Error page at FryeWiles.com!A Custom 404 Error Page will allow your visitors more opportunities to explore your site, instead of just leaving it completely. By adding a Custom 404 Error Page to your site, this can help prevent the loss of visitors and open up many opportunities as a result. Even better, the process is fast and simple!

With a custom 404 page (like the one shown below), you could include a more humanized message, your website's name, helpful links, or even a search box for your visitors. Even better, you can grab visitor attention by making the page informative, funny, or eye catching. Overall, any deviation from the outdated default page is bound to catch some extra attention!

    404 Error Page Requirements

First, check with your web host, because you won't be able to customize your 404 page if your host doesn't allow it. Host sites like GeoCities and TriPod won't allow the customization of a 404 Error Page. To find out if your web host allows a custom 404 Error Page, it can usually be found in their documentation.

Also, the Internet Explorer web browser has trouble displaying custom pages unless they are larger than 512 bytes. This can be fixed by selecting Tools - Internet Options - Advanced, and then un-checking the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" check box. We enjoy the Mozilla Firefox browser, because it has overcome many of the issues the Internet Explorer is STILL facing today.

Check out this Custom 404 Error page at Patterntap.com!An HTTP 404 "Not Found" Error Page varies by ISP (Internet Service Provider). Below, you will discover how to create a custom 404 page with WordPress - today's most popular and user-friendly content management system.

    Custom 404 Page via WordPress:

By default, all WordPress themes should automatically include a 404.php file that displays a generic 404 'Not Found' Error page when a 404 error takes place.

Follow these 10 easy steps to edit the default 404 Error Page in WordPress:

    1. Open your WordPress admin panel
    2. Select 'Design Menu' (Presentation pre 2.5)
    3. Choose the 'Theme Editor' page
    4. Find and open the '404 Template' file (Notice there other HTTP Errors that you can customize as well).
    5. If your WordPress Theme does not include a template file named "404.php", click here to create an HTTP Error 404 "Not Found" Page.
    6. To make sure your 404 Error Page is up and working, search for a URL that does NOT exist on your server (such as http://www.yoursitename.com/oops) to view it for yourself.
    7. Compared to your site's overall content, search engines will most likely rate your 404 Error Page as irrelevant  - which can significantly hurt your search engine optimization (SEO). You can instruct search engines to overlook this irrelevancy by adding the following code to the TOP of any page - preventing search engines from indexing it:
    8. <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">
    9. To keep a log of all the 404 errors that occur on your site,, use the WordPress Redirect Plugin. This plugin also manages 301 redirections, and can generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have.
    10. You are now ready to edit your Custom 404 Error Page!
